Slightly off the beaten track from the main hubs of Borough Market and Tooley Street, this eloquent Thai Malay restaurant is a secret jewel.
Don’t be fooled, you’ll need to book in order to dine there, and for some bizarre reason they’re not open in the day over the weekends, but come the evening, the place fills with hungry locals all hungry for their Thai fix.
As a vegan I was pleasantly surprised to receive my very own, albeit rather dull-looking vegan menu. I ordered the Okra with chilly chutney as a starter and was impressed by the size and tastiness of the dish. The chilly chutney on the side was also delicious and taste I’ve never experienced before.
My husband opted for the vegetarian goat’s cheese parcels with toasted sesame seeds and red onion compote, another tasty starter perfect for any vegetarian.
After gulping that down (along with a delicious glass of red wine) next came the mains. I opted for the Thai green curry with tofu, butternut squash, peppers and steamed asparagus, accompanied by a side of sticky rice.
This was the first time I ever had Thai Green Curry served to me on a flat plate (most restaurants serve it in a rounded bowl) but wow, heaven! Hands down one of the best Thai curries I’ve ever had. The peppers and squash were roasted to perfection, and the way the dish was contrived made it quite fun to pick apart and eat.
Vegan food, delicious! Absolutely nothing to complain about and something I will most certainly be coming back for on a special occasion. The restaurant is more expensive than your traditional Thai Malay café, so best to save for special events.
Service, although very efficient, sadly a little disappointing in terms of staff warmth. As with most typical Thai restaurants I’ve eaten at in London, the staff weren’t overly friendly, bordering on appearing a little miserable in fact.
Nonetheless, the food speaks for itself and as a vegan, a delicious meal was had knowing yet again, that no animal was harmed in the making of my meal.
